As I pursue this goal of “hearing what you see”, I’m reminded of learning experiences that have contributed to my own development. My piano teacher from grade 2 through high school encouraged me to sing as I played, and singing the letter names was an integral part of learning them. In my first-year college theory class and in another class we sang many melodies with syllable names. In addition to this, a foundation was laid through the harmonizing an ascending and descending scale harmonization in all the major keys. However, as I reflect on my early training, I think I would have benefitted from some emphasis on theory as an integral part of pedagogy. Toward the end of my teaching career I explored the potential of MIDI, as you’ll see at the end of this video.
